Thursday
Day four complete. A lot got done today. The game is now playable! As you can see, the players can now rotate and shoot their grappling hooks. I've also started working on the menu system, which proved to be more complicated than I expected. Most of my time today went into the menu system.
There are some particularly elusive bugs that arise when the window is resized or the aspect ratio changes. Fixing those is top priority for tomorrow. Once the system is in place, I need to make a pause menu, a controls screen, and health bars, so players can tell whats going on. I think I can get away with using the pause menu as the main menu. I also need to look into cross-compiling so I can build a version for both windows and macOS.
On a separate note, I realized today that much of the code I'm writing for Grapnel can be reused in future games. I'm considering building my own library -- dare I say, my own engine -- on top of SFML as I work on these weekly projects. Hopefully I'll have something worth sharing by the end of it.
